What kind of security are we talking about anyway? nothing beats the
security of having multiple redundant copies of your data being mounted
into the same union namespace from remote locations, some of which may
be write-only. Inferno provides simple solutions for data integrity,
which is the normal 'joe average' concern. Authentication? SHA/MD5
library routines -- Keyring management.. Secrecy? the SSL is easy to
use. 

Prevention of destruction of resources by mobile code fragments
frequently referred to as applets?

limited execution environment by clamping on the namespace. Can be done
by the program responsible for loading the code (i.e. a browser / reader
/ window-manager), totally behind the scenes.
