I have resolved the problem with the unresolved sched_yield symbol! [You may want to put this in the FAQ, Lucent.] It appears that the sched_yield was expected in libc, and not in pthreads after all. If your version of libc is somewhat older (mine was 5.2.18) then you'll need to upgrade to 5.4.x in order to run Inferno. Since libc 5.4.13 is considered an "unstable" package in the Debian distribution (this will change soon, no doubt) any Debian user with stable-only libraries will need to upgrade just this one: libc5_5.4.13-1.deb
