forsyth's gif program has this:

	sys->pctl(FORKFD|FORKNS, nil);

which looks like an idiom.  i recently stumbled on some
problems caused by sh, wm, and dir not correctly splitting
the state of their children with pctl, so in some future release
this pctl call will be superfluous.
